I was thinking the same thing when I was browsing the scrollback in 
irssi. Lots of interesting discussions going on there, and it's hard to 
keep track of the context and reply without threading and quoting. 
Moving the important discussions to the mailing list is a Really Good 
Thing™, and it's archived properly.
